Centre of Competence in Digital Education (C-CoDE)

Background

The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST),through the Centre for Water Infrastructure and Sustainable Energy Futures, was among six universities in Africa selected in 2021 to host the C-CoDE as part of the joint ‘Excellence in Africa initiative by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) and the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P). Through a competitive process, NM-AIST submitted a proposal in 2020 among Forty-four (44) universities from nineteen (19) countries across Africa based on the quality and relevance of their projects and was among the six (6) African universities were selected, namely:

    • The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology, Arusha, Tanzania
    • University of Abuja, Abuja, Nigeria
    • École Supérieure Multinationale des Télécommunications, Dakar, Sénégal
    • Université Nangui Abrogoua, Abidjan, Ivory Coast
    • Moi University, Eldoret, Kenya

The C-CoDE at NM-AIST is designed to support the transformation of training and educational practices through digital tools and technologies in Tanzania and in the broader region.

Objective of C-CoDE

  • Aim to promote the sustainable integration of digital education in African universities as a means to strengthen the quality of teaching and, ultimately, the competencies of graduates.

 

Inauguration of C-Code (2nd October 2023)

  • 2nd October 2023 launched a Centre of Competence in Digital Education (C-CoDE) in the presence of the  Director of the Science, Technology and Innovation department from the Ministry of Education Science and Technology, Prof. Ladslaus Mnyone.

Also, the launch of the centre was attended by Deputy Ambassador from Switzerland to Tanzania Mr. Holger Tausch, Director from EPFL Dr.Jérôme Chenal, Project Manager EPFL Dr.Frédéric Meylan, Project Officer EPFL Lisa Myers, Dr. Rafiq El Alami from UM6P and Representative from Arusha Regional Administrative secretary Mr. David Lyamongi,  Mr. Aloyce Shirima and Ms. Hannah Simmons from Silverleaf Academy, Keynote speaker from UDSM Prof. Joel S. Mtebe, students, academicians and staff from NM-AIST.

 

Implementation phase

  • To train faculty members to produce effective educational videos, so that they can also introduce digital education in their teaching.
