Water Infrastructure and Sustainable Energy Futures in partinership with The University of Manchester,  held an international research and practitioner’s network on irrigation and agricultural development in Africa at The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) from15th -16th  March 2019. The workshop was attended by 50 participants from regional and international.

The workshop aimed to bring together public officials, technicisns, private sector actors, donors, NGO representatives, and researchers, to study, presentation and discuss ongoing dynamics and options in irrigation development in Africa, ranging from agribusinesses, public irrigation schemes and farmers’ irrigation initiatives. To present the research findings of the Study Africa Farmer –led Irrigation (SAFI) and ARF research projects, and discuss the dynamics of farmer-led irrigation development in Africa.

The network aim at, among other things, Irrigation policy discussion, research activities/ project and collaboration, also as a platform for bringing together government, the private sector, donors, NGOs and farmers to spin the wheel of development in the area of irrigation.

The WISE-Futures African Center of Excellence was proposed as home-base and secretariat of the SAFI-network for two years (2019-2020). In the future ,the secretariat will ideally rotate among African institutions of research and higher learning.
